Download a poster Source City Angels is a project that supports people who are out and about in Chichester city centre on Friday nights. The project’s volunteers offer a calm voice, a listening ear and a hot drink to anyone in need. In just over a year the City Angels project has already had a massive impact. Their work has contributed to a 56% reduction in violent crime on a Friday night. City Angels use Lamplight to capture information about the people they support. By combining their own data with official crime statistics the City Angels have been able to successfully demonstrate their impact and secure more funding in order to expand their service to cover Saturday nights. The City Angels project was launched in January 2012, with two part-time support staff, 50 volunteers, a little drinks van called Charlie Alpha and lots of support from the police, pubs and district council.
Every Friday night volunteers capture on paper forms key pieces of information about the people they support. After the evening’s shift the information gets entered into Lamplight. City Angels’ have been able to use their data on Lamplight to show that:
As City Angels have been able to evidence what work they’ve done and the impact it has had on the city’s crime statistics they have successfully secured funding to expand their service to cover Saturday nights. The data here seems really convincing: it’s been a great natural experiment because it started small. Without the funding to run both nights, there’s been the ‘control group’ of Saturday nights with no angels, and they’ve seen the impact of the project both compared to the previous year and compared to a Saturday night during the same period. It also highlights for us the great strengths of the voluntary sector: this is a relatively cheap project, and it’s really simple: a cup of tea and a bunch of calm, friendly (and courageous) people in the right places at the right times. City Angels is supported by Chichester District Council, Sussex Police and Chichester Safety Partnership. A new permanent Street Angels team launched in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire on Good Friday. The town has seen patrols on peak evenings led by volunteers from Halifax Street Angels for the last 2 years and now has a base at St Paul's Methodist church.
Paul and Jean Blakey spent Easter weekend in Exmouth on the Devon coast. They met with the Open Door NightShift volunteers and people looking at setting up a similar scheme in Teignmouth and Dawlish.
The project was launched 5 years ago and has seen the numbers of people out and about on weekend evenings reduce significantly over this time due to the closure of the university campus. There is sill a need for OpenDoor Nightshift and it was great to hear of feedback from people who have received help (including the daughter of the bed and breakfast who has received flip-flops from the volunteers on 2 occasions and was very thankful that people were out and about to make sure she was safe). The team have great links with door-staff, pub and fast food owners, taxi drivers, CCTV (which is run by volunteers) and police. The evening started with handing out creme eggs (it was Easter Sunday) to people working in the town! Easter Sunday (known as Super Sunday locally) is the night when many people go out and there was queues at the clubs later on in the evening. Barry from OpenDoor had an idea of prayer twinning - twinning CNI Network projects together to share prayer needs, good news stories, etc. If you are interested in this email Paul. Source
THE plight of Bolton families struggling during tough financial times was highlighted during a “Gifts of Easter Hope” event in the town’s Victoria Square on Saturday. Many Christian, charitable and welfare organisations united to provide vital information and advice for visitors. And it was fitting that Bolton Wanderers Community Trust should also be represented as the soccer club’s international midfielder Stuart Holden had given his support to the event. People had the opportunity to make donations to the food bank or offer help with volunteering. Foodstuffs collected during the day at the Urban Outreach (Bolton) stall will be distributed to local needy families. Among those taking part were St Luke’s Church, the Salvation Army, Christians Against Poverty, Street Angels, Befriending Refugees and Asylum Seekers (BRASS) and Bolton Community and Voluntary Services (CVS). Visitors were given information about debt support, counselling, health, alcohol and drug dependency and social welfare support. And representatives from Bolton Council provided benefits advice. The Rt Rev Chris Edmondson, the Bishop of Bolton, opened “Gifts of Easter Hope” and other guests included the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, Guy and Colette Harkin, Bolton Wanderers Community Trust also set up a “chip-it” area to test the footballing skills of youngsters. Wanderers’ club chaplain Phil Mason said “Gifts of Easter Hope” was important in raising awareness of those in crisis and the services available, such as the food bank. Praising thework of Bolton Wanderers Community Trust, he added: “Its aim is to get involved and to engage with the community.” Mr Ibrahim Ismail, chairman of Bolton CVS, said that the problem of families facing financial hardship was not confined solely to one particular sector. He said: “A lot of people from all sections of society are affected by these economic times.” Among those involved in organising “Gifts of Easter Hope” were Churches Together, Bolton Christian Community Cohesion and Urban Outreach. Vicar of Bolton, Rev Matt Thompson, said that “Gifts of Easter Hope” recognised that some people were facing “hard times.” He added: “It was a very special event. It was held particularly to show the people of the borough that the churches and their partners are trying to reach out to the community while at the same time collecting for the food bank.” Source
The traditional Walk of Witness was held in Maidenhead town centre yesterday. About 300 people took part in the event, walking behind a wooden cross which was carried from Park Street through to St Ives Road and up the High Street. Stops were made along the route for prayers, hymns and readings, with music and a drum beat provided by the Salvation Army. The final stop was made outside High Street Methodist Church, where warm drinks and hot cross buns were served afterwards. Helping to ensure the procession ran smoothly were Maidenhead Street Angels. The walk was organised by Churches Together, whose president, Keith Harrison, said: "I think the majority of people who came along said they enjoyed the event. "We were very fortunate with the sunshine, so although it was still cold it was more cheerful than it might otherwise have been." The Street Angels - CNI Network Trustees, Regional Leadership Team, Paul and Jean wish you a Happy Easter. "Jesus, risen from the dead, said, "Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God's good news to one and all." Thank you again to all who volunteer on the streets and in steering groups, those who pray, those who help with training, those who help finance and those who stand with us. Street Angels - CNI Network is very much part of God's good news to one and all as we take part in Kingdom of God work - a Kingdom already here but also in the making! The second early booking rate for the Street Angels - CNI Network National Conference comes to an end at the end of March. If you intend to come please book as soon as you can to help us and the hotel. The weekend looks set to be a fantastic time of networking, learning, celebrating and commissioning us for our work on the streets and in nightclubs. So far we have 15 projects coming along (with others still to book) and it would be great to have input from each and every project across the UK. Our 2001/13 Annual General Meeting is taking place on Tuesday 25th June at the Salvation Army in Hoyland Common, S74 0FG. The night will include a free buffet tea and an opportunity to find out more about the work of SA-CNI. As part of the AGM we are voting on a change to Membership -information can be found on this page. It would be great to welcome you to this evening. The work of Street Angels was raised in Topical Questions in the House of Commons on 20 March 2013: David Rutley (MP for Macclesfield): Can my right honorable friend confirm that the big society awards help highlight the important work of community groups, just as the 2012 award did for the Street Angels initiative, which helps make night life safer in Macclesfield and in hundreds of towns and cities across the country? Nick Hurd (Parliamentary Secretary (Civil Society), Cabinet Office; Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner): I can certainly confirm that the big society awards are there to throw a spotlight on and celebrate outstanding community-led initiatives, such as the Street Angels initiative that has done such good work in Macclesfield and has now spread to more than 70 towns across the UK. I encourage colleagues on both sides of the House to think about nominating community initiatives to the big society awards through the No. 10 website. A Street Angel from Cleethorpes has designed a comic book "Who are the Street Angels?" Steve Beckett is a designer for The Beano and this comic book can be re-designed for your project. See this page for more information. Our friends at Lincoln Street Pastors have developed an app - YourNight - which is a free download on iPhone and Android and will help people to have a safe and fun night out. This is now available to local projects to edit and develop for use in their local area at £30 per year. Contact Paul if you are interested or see this page for more details. Stockton Town Pastors, Yarm Town Pastors and Boro Angels feature in a YouTube video which is available here. We are aiming to update the video page on the SA-CNI web site so please email Paul a link to any unfeatured videos. We are really excited by the potential and growth of Club Angels. Pioneered by Beth Tash in Leeds, Club Angels works inside and alongside nightclubs to create a safer night for all. Run by Christian volunteers who hang out in clubs with t-shirts saying "Chat, Help,Listen and Care - PS we're Christians - ask us more if you want!" the scheme has proved so successful a national chain which manages 59 bars across the UK are wanting to see this replicated UK wide. Third Space Ministries are looking to work in Croydon (see here for details) and Beth is pulling together a "how to set up Club Angels" page for the SA-CNI web site. We have also had interest from other pubs and clubs including several in Dundee. Please pray for this initiative as we seek to replicate it UK wide and especially for the team in Croydon. SA-CNI are here to support over 120 local projects across the UK and resource new ones to start. One of the ways is www.wehelpedu.org.uk which has loads of ways people can donate financially to a local project or the national work including skydive's, on-line giving, jungle treks, by text, etc. Do include this link on your web site, social media and promotional literature. If you make www.everyclick.com/sacni your homepage (and register) you can raise money for SA-CNI as you search. You can also raise money as you shop on-line. web: www.sjbeckettdesign.co.uk email: [email protected] Lincoln Street Pastors have developed the YourNight App - www.yournight.mobi - and is available for all Street Angels - CNI Network and Street Pastors groups to use within their local area.
See information sheet (text copied below - the download includes pictures of the app) Users can download the app from either the iTunes or the Google Play store. When the app is installed they can select the various locations available. Location administrators can enter data into the bespoke database allowing information such as the names, contact details, address and specific location of the various pubs and clubs, taxi ranks and eateries. They can also populate the important telephone numbers of the local and national agencies which may be of help to revellers. Under 'Who are we?' you will have the ability to amend and change all content except for the web link entitled Legal Notice which must remain which states "This App has been developed by Ascension Trust and the Street Pastor network, and its use in areas where other night-time ministries operate does not imply any partnership with or endorsement by Ascension Trust or Street Pastors. If you would like to see Street Pastors patrolling in your local area, please visit the website for more information (www.streetpastors.org.uk) or contact [email protected]." Development of the app has cost, and continues to cost, a significant sum of money but we do recognise in these austere times that Street Pastor or CNI group do not have much surplus cash. Hence we merely ask for £30 per year for the use of the app. Contact Paul if you are interested. |
