A STREET Angels group which patrols in Littlehampton, Arundel and Bognor Regis has received a donation of £1,000. Sussex Police donated the money to Arun Angels to help pay for training and equipment for new volunteers. Arun Angels is a Street Angels scheme in Bognor, Littlehampton and Arundel that has been in operation since 2009. Every weekend the Arun Angels are out on the streets of Arun engaging with vulnerable and intoxicated people. Sussex Police said their ‘much-valued’ community work supports them in preventing crime and anti-social behaviour. Inspector Oliver Fisher said: “This donation is to help ensure Arun Angels can continue to support those in our community who at the weekend may find themselves vulnerable through intoxication or other circumstances. “The work is a valuable contribution towards reducing crime and antisocial behaviour in our towns.” Source KEY103's calling for more protection on the streets of Manchester to prevent further tragedies in the City Centre. Following the death of 17-year-old Adam Pickup in December we're launching a campaign to recruit teams of so-called Street Angels. At least five young men have died in similar circumstances since 2011. Our Chief Reporter Michelle Livesey's been speaking to Tina Thomlinson whose son Nathan vanished on his works Christmas Party over three years ago.... At the moment voluntary groups of Street Angels operate in 125 areas of the country but NOT Manchester - their Founder is Paul Blakey.... All this week we'll be looking at the work Street Angels do and how we can get a scheme set up in Manchester.
Look out for our special dedicated Street Angels Manchester page and recruitment forms coming soon. To find out more about the Street Angels charity go to: www.sa-cni.org.uk Source
STAFF at York’s Tata Steel Projects have raised £1,625 for York Street Angels. The design and manafacturing firm in The Crescent, off Blossom Street, held bake sales and dress-down days as part of their fundraising. Hayley Cowell, from the firm, said: “We chose to support Street Angels as it’s a local charity that is close to a lot of people’s hearts.” Dick Syms, fundraiser and volunteer for Street Angels, said: “We’re very thankful to the staff at Tata Steel Projects for raising such a great sum. We have recently purchased a minibus that requires painting and equipping and this money will go towards that.” Street Angels York is a church-led initiative which sees volunteers walk the city streets into the early hours on Friday and Saturday nights caring for, practically helping and listening to people, especially those in vulnerable or difficult situations. A few projects are reporting people suffering the effects of taking part in 'neknominate' over the weekend (including one report of someone killing a seagull, cutting it open and adding its insides to a beer to drink).
This craze, over the last few weeks, has already killed 3 people. Can we encourage that if someone 'neknominates' you that you use the challenge to #Do1NiceThing for someone else - buy a homeless person a meal, film yourself doing something nice for others - that is far more worthwhile than potential death or night at A&E - www.do1nicething.org.uk We are also encouraging people to sign the HM Government e-Petition - see here. Some articles: Wash My Pink Jumper NekNominate press release Metro - first Briton dies after neknominate dare Mirror - horrified mum posts neknominate pictures of son to Facebook Recent TV programmes, such as BBC 3's 'Under-age and over the limit' and Channel 4's 'What happens in Kavos and Sunny Beach' have highlighted the massive role alcohol and binge drinking has to play as a right of passage for British teens.
The BBC 3 documentary had some alarming statistics, including:
Seeing many of the issues and dangers alcohol can cause within the UK’s clubbing scene, founder of Street Angels - Christian Nightlife Initiatives, Paul Blakey MBE, had an idea to design an ‘Alcohol and Safety Education Resource’ that could be used within schools, youth groups, uniformed groups and by parents. Speaking to the local schools worker, Tony Buck from Christian Initiative in Calderdale Schools, the idea soon became a reality. Using experiences from life on the streets with Street Angels, the pack seeks to help teachers or youth leaders gain an understanding of what young people already understand about alcohol and a ‘good night out’. The activities and resources available in this educational resource help students to engage in this important topic in a fun and interactive way. Young people are able to learn, reinforce and apply facts about alcohol safety to their own lives and the lives of their friends. We recently piloted the resource in a local secondary school and delivered the sessions in partnership with regular Street Angel Volunteers from the local area. We found this joined up approach enabled the students to relate fully with the material as many of the stories they heard had happened in places that they are familiar with. This brought home the reality of some of the problems commonly associated with alcohol misuse as some case studies had happened in the students’ local community.
The pack is available as a PDF download and is suitable for Teachers, Youth Workers, Schools Workers, Health Care Professionals and parents wishing to communicate to young people a clear and comprehensive advice around alcohol safety for them and their friends. You can purchase from www.angelresources.org.uk for a suggested £10 donation. The existing resource is suitable for all secondary aged students (11-18) and we a currently working on a new edition that will be suitable for primary school students (8-11). Photos taken by Mark Russell Source (with photos) CHAMPAGNE flowed as scheme aimed at raising the standard of nightlife in Bedford Town Centre drew to a close this week. In total, 18 premises applied to be accredited for the Best Bar None initiative but just 13 met the tough safety and customer service standards required. The climax of the evening, held on Tuesday in the Bedford Corn Exchange, came as the best overall venue and public choice were announced. Elements Nightclub in Mill Street scooped the top award, while silver went to The Barley Mow and highly commended to newcomers Pub in the Hub. Gabi, manager of Elements, said: “We are very proud to have received the Gold Award. “Every venue that was accredited worked extremely hard to reach the required level.” The scheme was launched in July with sponsorship from the National Best Bar None organisation, Charles Wells, BedfordBID and Bedfordshire on Sunday. Judges from the fire service, Charles Wells and the BID reviewed inspection reports ‘blind’ to pick the most deserving winner. On the night, plaques were awarded to representatives from the 13 venues by the Mayor, Dave Hodgson, and Police Chief Inspector Neill Waring. A Public Choice award as voted for by you, the readers of Bedfordshire on Sunday, went to The Barley Mow in St Loyes Street. As one of the oldest Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender venues in the country, manager Jake Kwan was thrilled to learn that the pub swept the board with two thirds of the vote. Collecting his award from BoS group editor Steve Lowe, he said: “I believe this award to really represent an affirmation of equality in Bedford. For an LGBT venue in a small town to be voted public choice is a great message and something Bedford should be proud of. “The town centre has seen some criticism recently. As an industry we get all the blame and rarely the reward for what are for the most part well run venues.” During the evening, more than £1,400 was raised for a defibrillator to be installed in the High Street after taxi marshall Dave Lancaster suffered a heart attack last year. An outstanding contribution award was also presented to the Bedford Street Angels, who have been taking care of partygoers on Friday and Saturday nights for the last five years. It was received by Angels coordinators Fred and Fran Gill whose son Robert was killed in 2007 during a night out in the town. Fran said: “We are honoured to be here tonight to collect this award for the Street Angels. It has been a pleasure working with such wonderful people over the years and I hope we continue to make a difference.” The prestigious award is named after Graham Dean, commercial services manager at the University of Bedfordshire Students’ Union, who died suddenly of a heart attack last November, and was received by Fred and Fran Gill on behalf of the Street The thirteen accredited venues were named as: The Bankers Draft; The Barley Mow; The Bedford Arms; Chameleon Bar; Elements; Number 13, Bedford Corn Exchange; The Pad Nightclub; The Pilgrim’s Progress; The Pub in the Hub; The Rose; Vibe; Vogue Bar and Club; and Yates.Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the commitment to drive up standards and promote a safe and enjoyable night out in Bedford Town Centre. “It was great to see that every venue had risen to the challenge of the scheme, which made it incredibly hard to decide the winner.” Fred and Fran from Bedford Street Angels are at 2:18 - Next week Key 103 FM in Manchester are running a week to highlight the work of Street Angels including Bolton Street Angelsand Oldham Street Angels Project

Wash My Pink Jumper Press Release – 03/02/2014 – Neknominate
Concerns over the latest internet craze “Neknominate” have been proven correct this week as a second young man loses his life in relation to the drinking game. Dublin DJ Ross Cummins was found unconscious in a house in Dublin city centre in the early hours of Monday morning, Ross was taken to hospital and pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Now police are investigating the death of Jonny Byrne whose body was recovered for the River Barrow in Co Carlow earlier this morning, they suspect Jonny’s death was also in relation to the Neknomination craze. Jonny’s brother Patrick is appealing for people to stop taking part in Neknominate before any more people are injured or killed as a result of the ‘game’. The Neknominate trend (originally known as “Neck and Nominate”) started in the UK in early January 2014 and has spread across the world, and had a strong impact in Australia and New Zealand where it reached high popularity and it’s echo reignited the impact of the neknominate trend in the UK and Ireland. The aim is to record a video of yourself “necking” a drink and then nominating others (usually 2 friends) to do the same. In an attempt to compete with previous videos, new nominees are drinking more and stronger drinks in more and more dangerous locations. Videos have been posted of young men and women drinking beer from toilet bowls, drinking their own urine and downing drinks in freezing conditions with very little protection from the elements. While some people are using this craze to try and make a difference, these are in the minority. One video has been posted of a young man in South Africa using his nomination to donate food to people in need instead of drinking alcohol for the entertainment, and encouraging and nominating others to do the same. There are also images posted of people using this as a nomination to donate blood at blood drives and to blood banks and again encouraging and nominating others to do the same thing. Unfortunately people trying to turn this trend into a positive are few and far between compared to the number putting themselves at risk and encouraging drinking to dangerous extents. Celebrities including New Zealand All Black star Steven Luatua has also taken part, although the sports star later apologised, the original video has been widely viewed and inspired many to take part. The neknominate craze has reached large volumes of people with the largest facebook page having over 33,000 likes and nearly 50,000 likes spread across other neknominate facebook pages. The popularity is also seen in the number of twitter posts including #neknominate and requests to be nominated, and at time of writing nearly 6,500 neknominate videos on youtube. Many alcohol action groups across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland have condemned the craze as dangerous and are encouraging individuals to not become involved and not give in to the peer pressure to create a video if they are nominated. Neknominate has already led to a spin off craze Skidnominate, where people are encouraged to record themselves skidding a car and then nominate 2 others to do the same and post the link to their facebook page (which already has nearly 12,000 likes). Wash My Pink Jumper is a registered charity helping young women trapped in binge drinking. We do this through mentors, known as “Big Sisters”, who provide support and encouragement for young women who have decided living is more important than drinking. www.washmypinkjumper.com [email protected] Guildford Street Angels have received a Best Bar None Award in recognition for their outstanding care and support to the people of Guildford town centre. Well done the team!
