York Street Angels have purchased our own Street Angels York minibus. Below is a picture of Kate & Terry Barnes alongside our new bus. The plan is to have it re-sprayed orange and liveried in our Street Angels York logo. We have some work to do inside to re-configure and remove some of the seats and build a small work surface from which to serve hot and cold drinks. Once all the work is done we will look to have a commissioning service and then have the bus out every Saturday night as a 'safe haven' for you to bring vulnerable contacts back to.
We are very excited about this new venture and would like to acknowledge the financial support given by many churches/organisations/companies & individuals. Source
AWARD-WINNING “street angels” have helped more than 1,000 revellers on nights out in Hartlepool. The Hartlepool town pastors patrol the Victoria Road and Church Street areas of the town every Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 3pm offering help and support to those who are in need. And since April last year the 18-strong team of volunteers – dubbed “street angels” for their efforts – have assisted more than 1,000 weekend drinkers. The pastors, mainly from local churches, are kitted with backpacks including flip flops for sore feet, water and lollipops for the dehydrated, and equipment to help clear up discarded drinks bottles to prevent them from being used as weapons. So far the team, funded through Housing Hartlepool, has been awarded two community awards from the Police Commissioner and Police Constable for their contribution and achievement in the area. Andy Powell, from Housing Hartlepool, said: “By working with and funding the Street Angels project, we are helping to provide much needed assistance to vulnerable people late at night and in the early hours.” Pastor Karen Milner said: “I’ve been part of the team since day one and still enjoy it - we have a great rapport with revellers, door staff, police and everybody out there.” Anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in becoming a Street Pastor can email: [email protected] or calling (01429) 296819. 11th March in Halifax - Inspiring Fundraising and Philanthropy in the 21st Century

York University Student's Union are considering adopting a national scheme to help inebriated students after club nights. The scheme, called ‘Street Angels’, is set to involve teams of volunteers looking after students in town at night. Though the plans are subject to change, the current idea is for teams of three to be in York city centre after YUSU-sponsored club nights. According to the written proposal, the project’s aims are to reduce the number of students in vulnerable situations at night, and alleviate pressure on the emergency services by providing a way to look after intoxicated students. Kallum Taylor, YUSU President, described the benefits of the scheme, saying: “It would really help those students who are in that awkward gap of being too drunk for a taxi, but not in a bad enough state to merit using the emergency services.” However, he also said that the scheme is far from final. Taylor emphasised that YUSU were “still looking into it”, but added that “it would be great if students could let us know if they’d be keen to be a part of this.” Street Angels - Christian Nightlife Initiatives Network are holding a one day conference in York. The day, on Saturday 12th April, aims to resource and equip those who volunteer on the front-line of communities within the night-time economy. The day will include speaker Jarrod Cooper who is senior minister of New Life Church in Hull, broadcaster and writer of the worship song "King of King's, Majesty". Singer Philippa Hanna, who has recently toured with Wet, Wet Wet, will be leading worship throughout the day and at an evening concert. Workshops will include: an insight into counter terrorism; looking at ways of supporting young ladies who want to move away from the binge drink culture; encouraging and promoting busking and live music within the night-time economy; setting up a 'Club Angels' initiative; and an introduction to 'I.Am' a short film which introduces people to a loving and forgiving God through 'pop up' cinemas. The day runs from 10am - 4pm with the evening concert starting at 7.30pm. Members of Tamworth’s Covenanting Churches (TCC) crowded into St Editha’s Church on Sunday to celebrate the town's many social action projects and to commission Tamworth Street Angels. They were joined by Chris Pincher MP, his Worship John Garner, the Mayor of Tamworth and representatives of church denominations – Rev Adrian Argile (Baptist Church Regional Minister), Revd Ian Howarth (Methodist Church, Chair of the Birmingham District) and the Rt Revd Jonathan Gledhill (Bishop of Lichfield). Rev Dr Steve Jonathan (Tamworth Elim) spoke of the work of the Tamworth Foodbank. Since it began some two years ago, it has provided some fourteen tonnes of food - that’s fourteen people being fed every day. He explained how those who came were not homeless but generally families who have hit hard times, been made redundant, suffered from illness or were experiencing benefit delay: a good cross-section of the UK’s hidden hungry. He continued by celebrating the work of the many volunteers and the coordinator: Lynn Le Worthy. The work of Foodbank was prayed for by the Rev Graham Criddle, minister of Tamworth Baptish Church. Paul Blakey MBE gave the address, during which he spoke of the opportunities Street Angels presented to change our community and to help those who might otherwise struggle to be kept safe, sharing in an expression of God’s love to the community. The Rt Rev Jonathan Gledhill prayed for and commissioned the Street Angels, and challenged the Christians of Tamworth to pray for and offer support for this valuable work. The film I.AM is a short, unique, contemporary, musical film showing Jesus love and forgiveness. It uses music, song, dance, drama animation, rap and montage. This great film will be available for use in the night-time economy of our local communities. Maybe a local night-club will allocate a room where people could go, calm down, receive a refreshing drink and watch this film (approximately 20 - 25 minutes). Maybe your night-time safe space drop-in could have this film showing and people are invited to escape for a while and watch. Maybe during Bank Holiday / summer weekends a 'pop-up' cinema could be created and the town invited. You are the people on the ground, The Lord may inspire you with additional ideas. We believe God is opening doors that have been shut for a long time. The DVD with articles, posters, invitations and programmes to print will cost £15.00 - the film can then be shown as many times as you like. A road show for churches/groups who are interested in reaching out with this film is being coordinated. It will show the film and give all the necessary advertising details, along with answering your questions. If you are interested, go to our website: www.amifilm.co.uk and email us: [email protected] We now have the dates for the Road Show touring the U.K. This is for Christians/Churches to preview the film I.AM if they are considering the possibility of using it in their area.
Please contact us If you would like to attend one of the road shows or if you would like your church/area to be included on the list. We are happy to stop at villages along the way. Please do not be put off because you think your church or community is too small….it is important to God and we have left enough flexibility to do this. We will be available morning, afternoon or evening. Tonight was a superb example of people celebrating the good things that others do to make their town a better place as Tamworth Covenanting Churches came together to celebrate and begin their Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The Diocesan Bishop, Jonathan Gledhill, was joined by representatives from the Baptist Church (Revd Adrian Argile), Methodist Church (Revd Ian Howarth) and Fr Noel Ntungu represented the town's many Catholics - The MP, Chris Pincher and Mayor John Garner were also present to represent national and local government. There will be a full report of the evening's proceeding later but one of the highlights was the commissioning of Tamworth Street Angels (accompanied by an excellent address by Paul Blakey MBE - Founder of the Street Angels group - CNI). Some images from the night: Fred and Fran Gill were interviewed on BBC Three Counties Radio ahead of the appearance on Songs of Praise - here are the interviews:

Many thanks to Asda customers who voted for Boscombe Angels in the recent ASDA appeal. We are so grateful as it will go some way to help make a difference within the night time economy of Boscombe. It is great to feel that the local community are backing us in such a positive way. Thank you from all the volunteers and thanks to Nic and Dick for seeking ways of fundraising.
The work of Bedford Street Angels is to feature on BBC 1's Songs of Praise programme on Sunday 19th January at 3.55pm. |
